Wright-Patterson to sponsor FIRST LEGO League Ohio State Championship 

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – The Educational Outreach Office herewill co-sponsor the FIRST LEGO® League Ohio State Championship Tournament atthe Ervin J. Nutter Center, on the campus of Wright State University, Feb. 12-13.

 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology President JonDudas will be attending the Ohio State Championship in honor of the 10th Anniversary for the partnership between the WPAFB Educational OutreachOffice and the FIRST LEGO League.

 The annual event will bring together teams of some of Ohio’s brightest 9 to 14 year-old students who will demonstrate their engineering and problem-solving skills, critical thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship, and sense of community.  Sixty teams from across the state will compete in this two-day event.

 Local teams participating are: RoBotkins, Botkins Schools; Lego-Jacks, Oakwood Schools; Tie-dyed Spies, Cedarville Neighborhood Group; The Psyclones, Beavercreek Neighborhood Group; The Ascension Knights, Ascension School; Robotic Eagles, Bishop Leibold School; Wright-Patt Team, WPAFB Home School Group; Bony Bunch, Ludlow Falls Neighborhood Group; PowerStackers, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery; Holy Bricks, Benjamin Logan Schools; Team BRICKS, Springboro Home School Group; Robotic Eagles, Rivers Edge Montessori; The Rolling Bones, Tippecanoe STEAM Booster.

On Feb. 12, teams will participate in closed-door judging, where they will meet with three panels of judges who will judge their teamwork, robot design and research project.  The judging portion of the competition is not open to the public.    

On Feb. 13, robot table competitions will run on the main floor of the Nutter Center from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The public can also see Team Research Project Presentations in our Project Showcase which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The competition is free and open to the public.

    Along with the FLL Ohio State Championship, a Junior FIRST LEGO® Expo, a design and build program for small teams of children between the ages of 6 and 9, will also be held.  Eight teams from around the state will show off their Body Forward solutions through their LEGO® models and their research posters.

   Since 1988, FIRST, an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology and the LEGO Group have partnered to challenge youth teams who use LEGO® bricks, motors, gears and software to design and build robots to solve real-world engineering challenges. 

  “The Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson has been affiliatedwith FIRST LEGO®, since 2001, and has been the lead organization for the program in Ohio since that time,” said Kathy Levine, state FIRST LEGO® League Director and Educational Outreach Office Robotics Program Manager at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  “This is all about sparking imagination and a love for science in children by showing that learning and fun can go hand-in-hand.”

 “The FLL Ohio State Championship follows 18 regional state qualifying events from Toledo, Canton, Columbus, Dayton, Cleveland, Warren, Chillicothe, and Cincinnati where more than 357 Ohio teams competed in December”, Levine said.  The FLL Ohio State Championship and the FLL Wright State University Regional are sponsored by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Educational Outreach; the Wright State University College of Engineering and Computer Science; the Ohio Educational Outreach Foundation; Teradata; Battelle, Dayton Operations; American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dayton Section; and Universal Technology Corporation.
