Dr Bret WilsonEach of us could use more energy to take on the challenges and opportunities of life.  Each of us could use more time to get things done.  We get bombarded daily with marketing promises to use products or services to be younger, healthier and more energy.  In the end the person with the most control over a life of vigor and the length and quality of that life is you.  There are 2 basic principles to making better choices for yourself and your health.  Take better care of your physical body and improve your mental emotional health.   Regardless of age, current level of fitness or state of health, these basic principles can be applied.

Your physical body is a wonderful machine, the better you maintain it, the better it will serve you.  Diet is how you fuel the body, research shows that a diet with more vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats reduces your risk of disease and improves your energy.  The diet should also limit sugars, processed foods, caffeine, alcohol and over eating.  Exercise should be regular and part of an active lifestyle.  Sleep is important for physical and mental health.  Adopt posture habits that reduce stress and fatigue.

Our emotional health, mental outlook and social involvement has a strong effect on our health and quality of life.   It is important to maintain strong relationships with family and friends.  Participation in community and social groups is important for mental health.  Regular involvement in religious or spiritual practices helps reduce stress.  Finding tools that you can use to reduce stress such as exercise, meditation, prayer, sharing time with a friend or even a nap are important.

The methods and specifics are as individual as you are, but the basic principles remain the same.  Take care of your body and take care of your mind.  The choices are yours and most of the effort should come from within you, not from some outside source, pill or potion.  Lifestyle choices have the greatest effect on quality and quantity of your life.   That is the secret to adding years to your life and life your years.
